GSM cell phone technology has become the predominant technology throughout the world for mobile communications. There are different frequencies that different mobile phone handsets work on but most handsets these days work across a number of the more popular frequencies so you should not be too concerned.
If you have a handset that will work in the country or countries that you are travelling to you have a few different options- you can utilise your home mobile and pay exorbitant roaming charges, you can buy a prepaid sim card in each of the countries that you travel to or you can buy a roaming SIM card and use it in all countries.
If you use your home mobile phone it will work in the countries that you are travelling to. All of the big mobile carriers have worldwide agreements but this doesn't necessarily mean that you should use your home cell phone. Roaming charges are exorbitant. Not only do you pay huge rates for outgoing calls but you will also pay to receive calls. To reduce these costs you may cut corners in keeping in touch with people back home. You may not make or receive calls. You may try to rely on SMS messages or, worse still, only emails.
You may try buying prepaid SIM cards from each country that you travel too. If you are only going to one or two different countries this may be okay but, if you are travelling across multiple countries, or if you travel regularly, this will not be convenient. You will have to constantly be calling back home to family, friends and work colleagues making sure that they have the right number to call you on.
The best option for the regular international traveller is a roaming SIM card. With a Roaming SIM you can make cheap calls back home. In many countries. you will also receive free incoming calls. This is where you will really experience the significant savings. With the right roaming mobile cell phone and international rates for the country that you are travelling to you could save up to 90% in some countries, when compared with what you would have spent with your home cell phone number.
If you are a regular international traveller it would be a wise investment for you to get a roaming SIM card (sometimes referred to as International SIM or World SIM.) You will save money and you will be able to more easily and conveniently keep in touch.
